Portrait Guidelines for Speakers and Presenters

The following guidelines are for anyone who has been requested to provide a photo of themselves for a BC Conference Event.

1. Professional Portraits Only – Photos should be taken by an experienced photographer with professional equipment. Cell phone selfies are not usable.

2. Simple, uncluttered background – the background area behind the subject should be fairly uniform and simple. Backgrounds depicting scenery (ie: forests, buildings, brick walls, etc) are not usable.

3. Even Lighting – the face and body of the subject should not have any shadow patterns. (ie: shadows of leaves or other objects between the light source and the subject.)

4. Face and Torso – Photos should include the entire face and most of the torso. No part of the body or head should be cropped so tightly that parts are missing. The background should be visible on all sides of the image with the exception of the bottom.

5. High Resolution – The image must have enough resolution to look good in print. Photos that look great on a phone may not be large enough to work for print. In general, images should be no less than 1500 pixels on the short edge and no less than 2500 pixels on the long edge.

6. No cropped group photos – Please do not use a photo of yourself in a group in which the rest of the group has been cropped out. Additionally, don’t submit a photo of you with your spouse or family unless your spouse is speaking / presenting with you.
