Farewell To A Beloved Pastor

Home > Latest Updates > 2014 Articles >
Pastors come and pastors go! That’s a fact of life, but it doesn’t make it any easier to say farewell to a much-beloved pastor and his wife.

When Pastor Brian Hawes announced his upcoming retirement from pastoral ministry some months ago, his announcement was met with much sadness on the part of members in the Rutland Seventh-day Adventist Church because they had come to love this pastor and his lovely wife, Karen, over the eleven years they had pastored the Rutland Church.

However, September 29, 2014, their last official day, finally arrived and members came to bid them adieu as they prepared to take up a new phase of their lives nearer to their family in Lacombe, Alberta.

The Worship Service that morning was special indeed. Pastor Wayne Culmore spoke on behalf of the BC Conference Office and expressed his appreciation for the contribution that Pastor Brian had made through the years. Ted Corbett, head elder in the Rutland Church, also spoke words of appreciation on behalf of the members and presented them with a gift certificate for Silver Hills Spa and Guest House.

A Farewell Potluck held in the Rutland Church Fellowship Hall followed the worship service. The room was filled to capacity as members and friends alike came to extend their well wishes and blessings to this special couple. The tables were tastefully and beautifully adorned with large clusters of purple grapes and vines. More tributes and musical selections were rendered throughout the meal and into the afternoon. It was all a fitting end to a pastoral ministry that saw many people take their stand for Jesus and countless others who had been encouraged and uplifted and helped in numerous ways. Every time we use our beautifully renovated and uniquely decorated fellowship room, Sabbath School rooms, and foyer, we will remember Karen and Brian.

With Pastor Brian leaving, a change comes to the Rutland Church! Pastor Cameron Koronko has been serving as Associate Pastor for the last year. Now he and his wife, Myrne, will assume the role of senior pastoral couple. We’ve already learned to love them and will continue to stand beside them and support them as they take up additional responsibilities.

To serve as Pastoral Intern and Youth Pastor is Rob Folkenberg who recently graduated from Walla Walla University with a degree in Theology. He and his new bride, Bethany (Gerber), have endeared themselves to our hearts in the short time they’ve been with us. We know that God will use this young, enthusiastic couple to bless us and make a positive impact on the youth and young adults in our congregation.

Donna Rose, Communications Secretary, Rutland SDA Church, Kelowna, BC
