In 1941, the World War II, the Japanese invaded the Philippines but it did not last long compared to the Spanish invasion of almost 300 years. That is because in 1945, Douglas MacArthur, a US Army General and Field Marshall of Filipino military made a statement, a promise “I Shall Return.”

“This statement became the powerful symbol which was the spiritual center of Filipino resistance. It was scraped in the sands of the beaches, it was smeared into the walls of the barrios, it was stamped on the mail, it was whispered in the cloisters of the church.  It became the battle cry of a great underground swell that no Japanese bayonet could still”1.

It became the hope of deliverance from the bondage of the Japanese. Douglas MacArthur fulfilled his promise and he has returned to deliver the Filipinos from the Japanese.

It is the same story with us as followers and children of God, God has sent His only begotten Son, our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, to redeem us from the bondage of sin. Jesus Christ who is our “Redeemer and Deliverer”, “the Prince of Peace”, “King of Kings”, “Redeemer of the World”, “Our Almighty Father” who came down to this earth to save His children, we are His children.

As found in Hebrews 9:28 NIV “so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many; and He will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for Him” and in Romans 8:1-2 NIV “Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death”.

Douglas MacArthur, made a promise to the Filipinos that he shall return but Jesus Christ, our Lord, made a promise not just to the Filipinos, but to everyone… everyone who believes in Him shall have eternal life.

As He promised in John 3:16 NIV“For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life”.

He also promised thatsomeday He is coming back to take us all home as found in John 14:3 NIV“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in Me.  My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you.  And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with Me that you also may be where I am”.

This place where Jesus will take us is a better place, as it is a place where there will be no more sin, no more greediness, no covetousness, no more wars, no more dying, no more crying, no more sickness, for all former things will pass away. God’s dwelling place will be among His people and He will dwell with them, with us!

What a great hope that we can all claim and look forward each day, the coming of His return to take us all home! Where we will fully experience the deliverance from sin and death, from the invasion of Satan and will forever dwell with Jesus Christ, our Lord, to the land that is full of joy, peace and love.

As we, Filipinos, celebrates today the 116th year of Philippine Independence, may we, as children of God celebrate each day the gift of salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Look forward each day for the coming of the Lord. May the many promises of our Lord Jesus be written in our hearts, be the life blood of our daily words and actions, may we share the good news to everyone that He shall return, may we hold fast to these promises because He who made these promises is True and Faithful.
