With great sadness, the family and friends of Ferne Reiswig announce her death January 30th, 2014, in Vernon, BC.

Ferne Anna Fell was born the 19th of February, 1926, in Sundance, AB, the sixth child of Ernest Henry McKenzie "Harry" Fell (1890-1982) and Bertha May Louise (Brown) Fell (1900-1974).  Ferne married Russell Reiswig May 25th, 1943 in Rutland, BC.  They celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary prior to his death in 2000.

Ferne and Russell were well known cattle ranchers in the Falkland area, operating a 400 acre cow and calf business on their Paxton Valley Ranch for over 40 years.  They harvested trees from their ranch land and sold rough cut lumber produced on their sawmill.  Ferne was a certified log scaler and had memorized the complicated mathematical tables necessary for scaling the timber they milled.

A long-time, active member of the Grandview Seventh-day Adventist Church in Armstrong, Ferne last held the post of Sabbath School Superintendent.  In her younger years, Ferne was a leader in the Pathfinder Organization at Grandview SDA Church and Vacation Bible School in Falkland.  Later, some of the VBS students became members of the Falkland Community Choir, which she organized and conducted for twenty-some years.

Ferne enjoyed traveling, she gave small cash scholarships (often anonymously) to gifted and needy college students and oversaw a community garden for many years on the ranch.  An ardent birder, Ferne's life list exceeded 600 identified species.

Between haying and calving, Ferne was a busy quilter.  Many children born in the Falkland district have been the recipients of the lovely baby blankets she made during her last quarter century In Paxton Valley.  The many quilts she made for her family and friends will keep them warm throughout the coming nights as they each say their heartfelt "Good Bye for Now" to one of the last great pioneer ladies—everyone's Auntie Ferne.

Ferne was predeceased by her sisters Joyce Fell, Muriel Shannon, Helen Hanson, Nona Combs, and her brother Bud Fell.  She is survived by her half-sister Kitty Lynch of Lacombe, AB, sisters-in-law Rubie Reiswig of BC and Dorothy Lodbell of Washington.  Very special thanks to Anne Nelson of Armstrong in whose home and tender care Ferne spent her last years.

Memorial services for Ferne will be held March 15, 2014, at 4:00 p.m. in the Grandview Seventh-day Adventist Church, 4678 N. Grandview Flats Rd., Armstrong, BC.

At her request, Ferne's cremains will be inurned beside her husband's on the ranch in Paxton Valley at which time a Celebration of Life will be held at the Falkland Community Church, the date and time to be announced in the spring.
